Air Italy closes down | The Independent

Another loss-making airline has closed down – but passengers with future bookings will be protected.

Air Italy has grounded all flights. It was 51 per cent owned by the Aga Khan through his Alisarda company, with the remaining 49 per cent held by Qatar Airways.

The collapse is far gentler than last year’s failures. Wow Air, Adria Airways and Thomas Cook all shut down immediately they went into liquidation.

But until 25 February 2020, Air Italy’s planned flights “will be operated by other carriers at the times and on the days previously scheduled”, according to a statement on the airline’s website.

After that date, passengers will either be “re-protected” (booked on other airlines) or get all their money back.

Air Italy, part of which was previously known as Meridiana, was a leisure carrier operating a mix of long- and short-haul flights.

Even by the undemanding standards of Italian aviation, Air Italy was astonishingly unprofitable. In 2018, its average fare was around €142, but it made a loss of €82 for every passenger it flew.

Its operations were hampered by the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max following two fatal crashes; it had three of the jets in its fleet.

The closure has taken place amid considerable acrimony, with Qatar Airways indicating that it was happy to continue to bankroll the losses in the hope that Air Italy would eventually become profitable.

One scenario was that Alitalia, which has been propped up for decades by the Italian state, might finally be allowed to fail – allowing Air Italy to step in on prime routes.

The Doha-based airline said: “Since the acquisition on 28 September 2017 of a minority stake in Air Italy, Qatar Airways has strongly believed in the company and in its potential, supporting management’s proposed business plan with a view to improving Air Italy’s growth and job creation, with the addition of long-haul routes and numerous in-flight service improvements, in line with Qatar Airways’ globally renowned high standards.”

As a non-EU entity, Qatar Airways is not allowed to take a majority stake in a European Union carrier.

Qatar Airways’ Gulf rival, Etihad of Abu Dhabi, made a disastrous investment in the Italian national airline, Alitalia – losing around $2bn before walking away after employees rejected a restructuring plan.

Coronavirus: Cruise ship ‘sailing to nowhere’ after being shut out of ports over health fears

A cruise ship has been sailing around Asia for almost two weeks after being shut out of four countries due to coronavirus fears.

Holland America Line’s Westerdam ship left Hong Kong on 1 February on a 14-day cruise around Taiwan and Japan.

However, due to travel restrictions implemented by governments to try to halt the spread of the deadly virus that has killed over 1,000 and sickened thousands more, the cruise ship was forced to cancel her planned stops as she found herself shut out of ports across Asia.

Alongside planned stops in Taiwan and Japan, the Westerdam was also shut out of the Philippines and Guam.

The liner is now planning to finish its journey in Laem Chabang, Thailand, near Bangkok, on 13 February – although the country’s health minister Anutin Charnvirakul posted a short message on Facebook indicating that the ship would be denied docking in Thailand.

The cruise company said that it was “aware of the reports regarding the status of Westerdam’s call to Laem Chabang (Bangkok), Thailand”.

It added: “We are actively working this matter & will provide an update when able.”

The ship was originally scheduled to end her journey in Yokohama, Japan, on 15 February, following calls to Japanese destinations including Fukuoka and Okinawa.

The liner, which has 1,455 guests and 802 crew onboard, has enough fuel and food to last until the end of its planned voyage, Holland America Line said in a statement. The ship is not in quarantine and there are no cases of coronavirus onboard, it added.

Several passengers have been tweeting their experiences onboard.

Stephen Hansen said: “My wife and I are passengers on the Holland America ship Westerdam in Asia that has now been rejected by several ports due to the Corona virus. A similar ship has been quarantined for 14 days in Yokohama, our final port.

“Not sure how or when but it will be good to get home.”

Passenger AJ said: “We are still sailing to nowhere.”

Guests will receive a full refund as well as cruise credit.

The plight of Westerdam comes amid a growing concern for the spread of coronavirus onboard cruise ships around Asia.

Many cruise firms – including Holland America Line – have implemented stringent restrictions for passengers amid the outbreak, including banning passengers who have travelled from mainland China and enforcing temperature checks.

Thousands of passengers are currently quarantined onboard the Diamond Princess ship, which is currently off the coast of Yokohama, Japan. More than 130 people onboard have tested positive for coronavirus so far.

Meanwhile, Genting’s World Dream ship was also quarantined last week in Hong Kong, while guests were tested for coronavirus.

Man starts ‘eating mobile phone’ on flight after drinking straight from gin bottle

A man who started “eating” his mobile phone after drinking from a bottle of gin onboard a flight to Iceland is facing jail.

Matthew Flaherty, 44, from Cheshire, was travelling on an easyJet flight from Manchester to Iceland in January last year.

A court heard how he drank straight from a bottle of gin, swore at cabin crew and threatened to kill them during the flight, which was forced to divert to Edinburgh.

During the mid-air outburst, Mr Flaherty started chewing on the electrical parts of his mobile phone, reports The Scotsman.

The phone battery began to smoulder, leading one cabin crew member to put it in a glass of water to stop it catching fire.

The plane’s cabin crew manager, who was “very intimidated” by his behaviour, said she was worried he might harm her.

““The accused took his mobile phone out and began to destroy it with his bare hands cutting himself in the process,” said fiscal depute Jade Doidge.

“He was seen putting parts of it into his mouth and chew them up.

She said: “The battery was discarded onto a a seat and as a result it began to heat up and began smouldering.”

Following Mr Flaherty’s behaviour, the pilot decided to divert the flight to Edinburgh airport.

Upon landing, Mr Flaherty was met by police officers who took him to a local station, where he is accused of racially abusing an officer.

He appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to charges including putting the safety of the flight in danger, and will be sentenced next month.

The Independent has contacted easyJet for additional comment.
